edizioni mondo as a label, has the goal to produce music that is descriptive of concepts, images and environments. inspired by library music, a genre frequently used as theme or background music in radio, film and television in that very same period, the name mondo has its roots in mondo movies, an italian movie genre born in the 60’s. mondo movies are characterized by documentary-like content that addresses several topics from around the world (mondo). numero nove comes courtesy of rotla. also known as mario pierro and raiders of the lost arp, waves is his third contribution to edizioni mondo. downtempo, trippy, playful and pardon us, balearic, its the soundtrack to the fading summer or the one starting somewhere else in this universe. accompanied by remix works from label head l.u.c.a. and balearic (again!) mastermind mark barrott with his sketches form an island healing hands, its the most balearic (threes a charm) record you will hear this side of the summer (wherever you are).

originally released as a limited run cassette on low jacks editons gravats label in 2017, we now get an official vinyl pressing via l.i.e.s. krikor kouchian serves this killer soundtrack to the documentary arabie saoudite: les liaisons dangerousness where the french tv program focuses on the saudi royal familys support of wahhabism and the wests appeasement of saudi foreign policy, kouchian underlines and accentuates the content with a brooding blend of mirage-like electronics and minimalist drum machine geometries. a deviation from his previous works and he moves into appropriately darker synth territory with this one.

too $hort’s legendary 1992 effort “shorty the pimp” is back in effect on vinyl thanks to the hip hop preservationist at get on down. though many don’t consider this to be one of too $hort’s strongest releases, the project did move well over 80.000 in its first week of release landing at number 6 on the billboard top 200. taking the title from the incredibly rare 1973 blaxploitation film, too $hort does what he does best on shorty the pimp: funk beats, oastful braggadocio, a few conscious rhymes and layers of straight up pimp talk. the lyrical content can certainly be considered comical and entertaining. “shorty the pimp” is also a stand out project for producer ant banks who did many of the beats for the project, his first works with too $hort with many more to follow over the next decade. oddly enough, one of the best comments on “shorty the pimp” comes from a random guy on the internet who commented on his experience listening to the release, “i ran my car into a tree after listening to ‘it don’t stop’ definitely made for cars with the booming systems!”

it s been a long time coming but now is the time for metamrophic to present out first various artist compilation. this one features 3 up and coming artists, goiz, jem, and jacksonville, as well as one track from label head dan curtin. of course the first compilation from metamorphic had to be called interstellar groove addictions, the unofficial slogan of the label since the beginning. these tracks are modern trips into the unknown, representing the mood of the label perfectly - fierce individuality, evolution in sound, and deeply felt emotional content.

(recorded from 1993-2000) they were incredibly kind in saying it was the best demo they had ever heard and passed it on to octal records for release, sadly, that didn t materialize and since then these masters have been collecting dust in our cassette rack for nearly 20 years now. we ve spent months doing our best to restore the old tapes from our tascam 688, an 8 track cassette recorder purchased and abused since 1992 and to our ears still sounds quite impressive even by modern standards. we ve had nearly every component replaced and re-calibrated to bring this obsolete machine back to life, it s been a truly nostalgic experience re-visiting and redesigning these masters. we truly hope you enjoy reliving these magical times of music, very inspired by all that was happening in those years, there was just something in the air, an undeniable energy, long may it live on..

for its third release, here to hell welcomes melbourne (via adelaide) veteran, rambl, and his incredible groover “doss”. this third release on the label happened purely by surprise, and what a discovery! the track itself is no accident, but the signing took place after a chance encounter. richard campbell aka rambl, who is one of melbourne’s best and most consistent djs since the last two decades, had developed a small cult following of viewers via facebook, where he had been providing live video coverage of australia’s wild weather in a kind of comedy-weatherman format. once these updates caught our attention, the magical facebook algorithm placed all of his content at the top of our feed.

zuli’s new offering trigger finger is a game of shadowy atmospheres and unquiet spirits. it functions as a spacial and temporal compactor, using sampling and field recordings to reconstruct reality’s dissonance, while at the same time reverse its own introspective character into bass weight and outworked tension. a kind of extremization of zuli’s own roots as a beatmaker for the cairo rap scene, tinged with the clandestine and delirious urbanism of grime and jungle, and fronted by the necessity to face its own dark side. but the dark and crusty sonic palette does not limit the possibility for the tracks to display various layers of emotional content.

dark entries is proud to release ‘commerce’, the third ep from san francisco-based trio inhalt, german for “content”. the group was founded in 2009, and for the purposes of this recording are matia simovich, philip winiger and steven campodonico. inhalt’s core operative strategy is of sonic fidelity and integrity rather than nostalgia. their first release was a split 12- on world unknown in 2011 followed by two eps on dark entries, a remix ep on emotional especial and a part time punks session on cleopatra. ‘commerce’ is a close examination of the self destructive tendency of the ego in relation to the allure of negativity and mass tragedy. the ep details the psychopathy of relentless thirst mandated by neo-liberalism and traverses through the adoption of social and economic technologies that strengthen domination vis a vis self enslavement to disempowerment. employing the best of both modern and vintage techniques, the four songs on the ep utilize dense production, big snares, and powerful german vocals from philip. inhalt are informed by the brooding soundtracks of john carpenter as much as the vastness and sheen of trevor horn, and set out to explore the borders between the vocal-driven pop song and the expansive dancefloor 12&#8243,,,, arrangement. the record was produced over four years at the bands own black sun loft recording studio and different fur studios. paul lavigne mastered the ep in london, england at kontrast mastering and george horn handled the vinyl eq curve at fantasy studios, berkeley. each ep is housed in a specially designed jacket by leo merz and includes a lyric sheet with english translations.

a virtuoso, known for boundary-pushing production (often fusing traditional hip-hop drum programming with sampling and live music) and thoughtful lyrics, black milk is respected across the industry for his unique sound, consistency and innovation. returning to the scene amidst a turbulent political climate, the detroit-born rapper/producer announces fever, his upcoming studio album. black milk s sixth solo rap album, and his first since 2014 s if there s a hell below, fever combines pointed and topical lyrics and brilliant musicianship, including percussion from all-star musicians chris “daddy” dave (d angelo, adele, justin bieber) and daru jones (jack white), bass by long-time collaborator malik hunter and keys and guitar from newcomers ian fink and sasha kashperko, respectively. black milk evolves his production style of fusing electronic, soul, rock and other soundscapes with electronic programming and live music, a method he began experimenting with on his 2010 release album of the year. a cohesive 12-track project, listening to fever evokes the feeling of scrolling through an endless news feed, finding black milk reporting and commenting on the world s problems with empathy, clarity, and wit. additional vocals from dwele, aaron -ab- abernathy, and sudie (a producer / vocalist signed to black milk’s computer ugly label) serve to juxtapose black’s heavy lyrical content with airy vibes. pressing on red & black coloured vinyl, comes with poster and sticker included.

magnetik north is live drum electronics. drum performances are fed through processors, samplers and sequencers to produce layers of rhythmic patterns that interact with each other. other instruments are melted into different textures so that only the harmonic content remains. this is a new project from ian tregoning, engineer and producer for artists as diverse as yello and fela kuti. now working with jaki liebezeit, the legendary drummer from can, to add his endless evolving rhythms. jaki s in a world of his own as he balances technical brilliance with subtle restraint. recording started in the summer 2006 in an old jazz studio in the south of ko&#776,,,,ln. jaki arrived with a minimal drum kit including customised cymbals, a snare and a huge gretsch floor-tom from the can days. all of jaki s performances are complete takes with no drop-ins, loops or edits. the backing tracks for evolver were recorded without using key changes. each song features one key which is held continuously while other instruments and effects are blended with the key. drums (also tuned to the same key) were added last which is another unusual technique. as jaki says they re often overlooked as tuned instruments in their own right . the finished results are a minimal blend of industrial and classical. like listening to a raga in an earthquake.

the red hook grain terminal is a post-industrial unit overlooking brooklyn that serves as a pillar of the recent work of sound-artist, jordan edge. inorganic is a collection of organic sounds that have been degraded by inorganic spaces and working methods. the listener is situated in a three-dimensional world where the deterioration of sound is equal to the creation of the content itself. a world of dampened acoustics, half destroyed spaces, dead room tones and manipulated environmental surroundings.

paper tree sneaked out into the world for a moment a few years back and then vanished. lee burridge loved the track so much that he continued to harass rebelski, sometimes standing outside his window in the flower bed, for weeks on end until he finally agreed to let lee release it on all day i dream. not content with a single track lee went back to rebelskis garden and tapped on the window repeatedly until he agreed to make some more beautiful tracks. obviously pestering producers in this manner bares fruit. the paper tree ep ranges from a beautiful solitary solo piano piece that wouldn t be amiss in a british period piece drama where someone dies unexpectedly leaving the survivors to deal with it, all the while maintaining their stiff upper lip. fly the kite made us want to go outside and do just that. so we did. it was epic. circles and squares joins paper tree as one of those dance floor moments best experienced with ones eyes closed. myriad is the sound of a young lady robots jewelry box (yes, we predict robots will be wearing jewelry in the future) that she(bot) pines to hear when she s all grown up and rusty. omoshiroi is, well, its just so damn pretty. good work rebelski. good work.

marionette is very proud and happy to announce kilchhofer s debut album the book room. benjamin kilchhofer is not new to the world of recorded music, yet he doesn’t seem to fit into a particular scene or group. as an outsider he is, however, fully immersed and melded into his own universe. he mentally escapes to a parallel world and weaves an alternate reality which would otherwise not exist in his daily life. kilchhofer avoids the spotlight and therefore isn’t really visible in today’s culture of ever changing content and social media. this is where marionette steps in to attempt to shed as much light as possible on this unique and incredibly talented artist. the book room is kilchhofer s musical diary, it s his library of emotions. it s a fairytale, an imaginary place shaped by exotic cultures, an escape from modern society, a collage of real and imagined experiences. you can hear influences abstracted from a wide number of musical approaches: the story-telling nature of folklore music, naive and conflicting rhythms of tribal drums, melodies and pads reminiscent of classical minimalism and microtonal experimental music, the freeform approach of early electronic music and krautrock, and buried deep within the tracks some hints of hedonistic dance and club music.

e ruscha v, who has previously released on the label under the secret circuit moniker, comes back with his first full-length under his given name. ruscha describes who are you as spanning states “from calm to ecstatic but mostly in-between these.” this description points toward the liminal atmospherics of the music, which dispose of the many hallmark genre traces that informed secret circuit’s galactic journeying. for who are you, ruscha was content to wander more intimate environments, in search of an uncharted music rippling with humble discovery. the vinyl release includesd a download code.

lp theres been an air of hypnagogic mystery surrounding acid tests sublabel avenue 66 from the start. joey andersons oblique, prince-inspired incantation above the cherry moon set the tone for a label thats sound that has found beauty in the furthest recesses of the dance floor, in the murkiest decay of kick drums and rave stabs. fitting then, that the first album on the imprint comes from trux, an artist who has chosen to reveal nearly nothing about themselves. following a cult classic mini-lp for office recordings, orbiter bears out the anonymous producer as a master of liminal, conceptual dance music. orbiters ten tracks have a vaporous, shape-shifting quality, threatening to topple over into full-on kick drum bliss or vanish into ambience. opener, with it, moves from heady ambient rush to skeletal piano, while blinko and roys garage spell out a hazy memoriam for the uk continuum. forlorn pianos ring out amongst the field recordings, excitable toms and jungle bass all softened in the enveloping gauze. orbiter positions trux as an unknown auteur who puts evocative world of tone and echo into dizzying motion, content to watch from the wings. track list with it orbiter blinko roys garage third glow in my world my row odd u agoma

next up on francis harriss newly-founded record label kingdoms comes something very special from brooklyn-based film composer, songwriter, producer and performer leah lazonick. movimenti della luna doro (movements of the moon of gold translated from italian) is a four-track ep from one of the most exciting musicians and performers around - a beautiful quartet of contemporary classical music with a twist. lazonick is something of a polymath, having composed and conducted orchestral and electronic scores for short films and commercials as well as being a classically-trained pianist. lazonick is also a connoisseur of analog synths and vintage drum machines, and will release a second ep focussing on these passions during the course of 2018. here we are treated to three luscious works for piano and string quartet, written for a one-off performance at studio off interarts, an art gallery in montreal. the piece was performed in a forest-like immersive environment, and was originally called in a forest (a piece in three movements). lazonick performed the piano parts along with a string quartet she had assembled for the performance/recording. lazonick explains: as opposed to most of the other songs/compositions i have written, i have no concrete sentimental story behind writing this piece. the motivation, inspiration and overall idea behind composing it was of a more technical nature, attempting to relay the music in my head at its purest form, without any compromises, by primarily making use of melodic and harmonic dissonances whilst still keeping the content captivating, musical and continuous.

design default makes a contemplative debut lp blending ambient soundscapes with electronica & jazz hints. entitled dawn chorus, the record sounds like a reflexion on awakening to new feelings and ideas as well as reminiscing and looking at those that came in the past. the lp opens in a playful and harmonious way with bells play, bringing forward the idea of awakening. the rest of the record designs a world in which slow unfurling soundscapes with heavy bass like the forest or two mirrors consistently stand alongside glitchy atmospheres like the distorted ecce or the celestial escale. tracks like peaks and notes or wood caving put the accent on harmonic and textural content. overall, the record is rooted in a cosmic almost new age ambient tradition, but focuses more on the idea of renewal than vagrancy and languishing. if ecstasy and euphory do not describe the feeling here, darkness doesnt either. the result is a balanced, mature and diverse lp, bringing many beautiful sonic atmospheres to life, and telling a journey of wonder of openness.
